Robert spent 30 years as a professional graphic artist and illustrator before becoming a full time successful fine artist in 2013. Recent accepted membership to the SGFA (as an Associate Artist in October ’20) describes in many respects in title his career path in a nutshell. Every image is creative in some respect or another he believes and none more so than those created by SGFA members.

Primarily his recent fine art work is focused on landscape and the wild northern vistas, dramatic mountain peaks and intimate hidden corners of moor and coast which he takes great influence from living in North Yorkshire. “The ‘ great escape’ landscapes are never far away – places where my creative vision is thoroughly released with a direct engagement and expressive response to my subject in such wild and open spaces” Robert quotes.

His richly layered paintings and drawings create an interplay between what is seen and expressively interpreted with an intimate knowledge of his surroundings. His paintings in particular evolve over time – weeks, months and even years and reflect ‘his’ landscape with its rich combinations of industrial history, people and places with the continual interplay between man and nature which forms much of his personal subject matter.

During the creative process en plein air drawings, photographs and location coloured studies, combined with collaged and printed imagery, create intriguing semi abstract responses in his work which connect time and place with natural and man made objects being juxtapositions with one another yet connected. Solid underlying drawing underpins all Roberts’ work and is fundamental to his belief and everything he creates as an artist.
