Biography:
Emily is inspired by the everyday, but in particular the underdog, whether that be an endangered bee or human being. She considers herself a storyteller, creating works that highlight environmental plights and wonders or hint at the private life stories of people.
She is obsessed with faces.
They show a person’s life, and can look different on a daily basis, a perfect canvas to convey different sides of your character. Her interest is to equally portray the skin alongside a representation of the sitter. Emily is a thread painter/drawer, instead of using paint or pencils she hand stitches the subjects, this gives her a control overtones and the details – likening the technique to drawing with colouring pencils. Her portraits are fragmented, inspired by relics and torn wallpaper, giving a broken-up view of the sitter yet recognisable at the same time. With a sense of history – of a ripped away memory left behind alongside a contemporary take on a traditional technique. The creating process has a nod to the make do and mend, as if with every stitch the self is being repaired (of the model and artist).
Emily has exhibited internationally, regularly in London, also across the UK in group and solo shows. Winning a Kent Creative Award for Visual Art (2017) she has also been a finalist in the Winter Pride Art Awards (2015), selected for the Royal Academy’s Summer Exhibition, Mall Galleries, Ruth Borchard Self Portrait Prize and have been a contestant in Sky Art’s Portrait Artist of the Year 2014.
