I have a background in graphic design and sales promotion advertising. However, in the last 20 years I have concentrated on watercolour painting as my preferred career focus.
To produce my paintings I often draw on photography and thumbnail sketches as a starting point. My work is mostly watercolour landscapes, inspired by the local countryside, mixing artistic license with realism.
Usually it is colour and the play of sun or long evening shadows that attract me to a subject, whether it’s a rural scene, woodland or in particular water and dramatic skies.
I use bold colours and strong tonal values, building up the watercolour paint, starting with washes and finishing with a dry brush or natural sponge to create more random marks.
Portraiture and silkscreen printing, which I sometimes combine with watercolour, are another part of my artistic practice. I also sketch outdoors regularly with a group of four friends.
I exhibit regularly at South East Open Studios, Florum in Sevenoaks and the Cranbrook Art Show. I have also exhibited at the Mall Galleries with the Society of Women Artists and the Royal Institute of Painters in Watercolour, and at Bankside Gallery with the Royal Watercolour Society.
