Artist: Valerie Warren  RBA FSIA BAS SWA SGFA

Artist Biography:

Trainee Insurance Broker, publishing secretary, lecturer in English Literature and, after marriage, jewellery maker, Art History Lecturer, Official London Guide: Throughout these phases I have always sketched and painted buildings, townscapes and landscapes for pleasure.

Eventually I turned professional, drawing for newspapers, journals, government bodies and countryside books. I also began exhibiting with national societies: the RWS, RI, Pastel Society, Society for Graphic Fine Art, Society of Architectural Illustrators, SWA, and RBA, becoming a member of the last four and winning three awards at their national exhibitions.

I delight in travel and in trying to capture `the spirit of the place`- the way in which materials, textures, colours and shapes reflect their surroundings and traditional way of life, especially in Italy, North Africa and India. I work with mixed media and love experimenting with styles. Although my work is becoming more abstract, there is always a structured drawing as a base.
