Artist: Kay Andrews  SGFA NDD ATD HS

Artist Biography:

Born in Newcastle upon Tyne, Kay trained there and in Leicester in illustration and ceramics. Her work is mostly representational, but with an imaginative approach to technique and subject matter. She prefers to work from her own resources of ideas, drawings and sketches made `on the spot`. Her belief is that drawing from life gives a greater feeling for and understanding of the subject.

She has a sound grasp of various media with which she is happy to experiment and be inventive. She is equally at home with pen, pencil and paint as well as mixed media, and works in a variety of ways.

Involved in art education for all her working life, she has still produced her own work and exhibited widely at various venues in the north east and the north west. As a member of the SGFA, Kay exhibits her work in the annual exhibitions and in the occasional exhibitions the society holds outside London

She has also had work exhibited at various times in the Royal Academy Summer Exhibition, the International Exhibition of Miniature Paintings, the Royal Society of Miniaturists annual exhibition, the Medici Gallery, and the Llewellyn Alexander Gallery, the last two both being in London, and as a member of the Hilliard Society she has exhibited at their annual exhibitions for many years.

She has recently had two exhibitions of her work on Merseyside and is planning another at Ness Gardens Visitor Centre in November 2008. At the moment she is experimenting with the various `new` types of pencil which have recently become available and is including torn and cut paper of the handmade variety in much of her work.

She hopes that her work evokes a sense of beauty and calm, delicacy and strength.
