I was born in London. I studied graphic design and illustration at Brighton and gained my P.G.Cert. Ed. from Manchester University. I have taught in secondary school and adult education. Later this year, I will be continuing my own education in Florence, developing further traditional drawing and painting skills, (I am eternally grateful for the free tuition in life drawing I received from Camberwell College of Art during my school days, and from my life drawing tutor, the War Artist Leslie Cole, while I was at Brighton).
I work in a wide range of media and having, in recent years, completed a course in sculpture, I am keen to explore the figurative possibilities that it offers.
My work has been exhibited in solo and group shows, and some pieces are in public collections. Recently I have exhibited with the Society of Women Artists at the Mall Galleries.
My work is drawing based and is mostly representational. When choosing subjects, from people to landscapes, I frequently find they have a history behind them, or an element of faded beauty. Everyday things never fail to stimulate me too, but also the not so every day world of the theatre has a fascination for me. Here, I can combine my own personal involvement and family ties with my keen interest in figurative drawing, to produce work centered on this exciting and varied subject matter.
The problems of drawing dancers in class, to drawing trees in motion, with all their unlimited possibilities of form and movement, are all part of an ongoing challenge for me. As well as Augustus John, and Lautrec among many, I have great admiration for John Singer Sargent. The following quotation about his work also echoes something I try to aspire to in my work.
"How well his line, vitality, and perception of character can transcend the limitations of a particular medium and style."
