Having climbed up into this famous cleft in the rocks several times, I had been keen to draw this powerful feature for years, but was acutely aware of how many great artists have done so before. About 3.00pm on a summer afternoon light floods in from above, so that a path of light strikes through the darkness, contrasting with deep shadows in the recesses.
