About The Society of Graphic Fine Art

The foundation of a Society of Graphic Artists was first discussed before World War 1 but the onset of that catastrophe in our history clearly prevented any development of such an idea until the War was over.

The inaugural exhibition was held in 1921 and was supported by Members of the Royal Academy of Arts together with many of the leading draughtsmen of the day. The first President in 1922 was Sir Frank Brangwyn, RA, RE. He was President again in 1937 and a figurehead for the Society until his death in 1956.

The initial aims of the Society were to give the opportunity for artists to exhibit works unimpeded by purely commercial considerations and ‘ to uphold and maintain the interests of all those forms of art that do not use colour as a form of expression'. At that time, black and white work was specified, colour being thought to be more allied to painting. Print making was allowed, mainly consisting of engraving, both on wood and copper and the etching process.

For many years the Society exhibited in the Royal Institute Galleries in Piccadilly but in 1971 transferred to the Galleries in the Mall, leaving there at the end of 1985.

Whilst black and white work and traditional skills are still a priority, in recent times a more progressive outlook has encouraged the use of colour and non - figurative work. The Society holds two membership elections a year, drawing excellence being the main criteria of membership in all media disciplines, though oil paintings are not allowed.

In view of some confusion relating to the image of the Society, Members decided by a large postal vote to revise the name, as from 1st January 1988, from: The Society of Graphic Art, to: The Society of Graphic Fine Art. It was felt that the addition of the word FINE should help differentiate the nature of Members' work from that associated with purely commercial art.

Today the Society maintains a steady membership of around 95 mainly professional artists from all spheres of the art world. It holds an increasing calendar of events throughout the year, culminating in the Annual Open Exhibition.
