Dawn, on the left has recently been recommisioned following an extensive refit. She was built at Maldon in 1897 to carry hay for the thousands of horses in London. The return cargo, dung, was spread on the fields, we call it recycling – I leave you to speculate what the bargees called it on a fine summer’s day!
